What is the Writing Test for IELTS Academic?
The Candidates taking the IELTS Academic Writing Test will get 60 minutes and will have to complete two tasks –
- Task 1 – In Task 1 Candidates have to some statistical information related to graph, table, chart, diagram, etc. And then they have to provide a summary of the information in their own words comprising of 150 words.
- Task 2 – In the Task 2 Candidates are given an argument or a problem. They are assessed on their ability to –
- Provide a solution to the issue.
- Explain and defend an opinion
- Compare and contrast evidence, viewpoints, and consequences.
- Analyze and question ideas, evidence, or an argument.
Marking and Assessment of the IELTS Writing Test for Academic:
- In both the tasks the candidates will be graded on their ability to compose an appropriate response in terms of contents, organization of concepts, and quality and range of language and grammar.
- Taking into consideration different parameters, in this segment the assessment of each task is done separately.
- Moreover, the assessment of writing performance is conducted by examiners trained and certified by competent, relevant and responsible authorities.

There are basically 4 criteria for assessment in the IELTS Writing Test for Academic:
Criteria 1
This criterion evaluates how appropriate, accurate, and relevant the response is in meeting the task’s objectives.
- For Task 1 – Academic Writing Task 1 has a well-defined input and a reasonably predictable outcome. It’s an information-transfer task that just concerns the factual content of the input data or diagram, not with hypothetical explanations that are not inclusive in the data or diagram. And, this task necessitates a minimum of 150 words write-up.
- For Task 2 – Task 2 requires test takers to establish and develop a stance in response to a provided prompt in the form of a question or statement. In addition, proof should back ideas, and examples from the test takers’ own experience also. If a test taker does not cover all of the points in a question, they will maybe a penalty. Moreover, responses must be timely and accurate.
Criteria 2
This criterion focuses on the message’s general clarity and fluency, such as how the response organizes and integrates information, concepts, and language.
- Coherence – This refers to the connection of ideas through logical sequencing is that we cite as coherence.
- Cohesion – It refers to the broad and suitable use of cohesive ties (such as logical connectors, pronouns, and conjunctions) to aid in the clarification of conceptual and referential ties between and within sentences.
Criteria 3
It assesses the lexical resource. This criterion refers to the variety of vocabulary employed by the test taker, as well as the precision and relevance of that language in relation to the task at hand.
Criteria 4
This is a test of grammatical range and accuracy. Therefore, this criterion refers to the test taker’s grammatical resource’s range and accuracy as shown in the candidate’s writing at the sentence level.

- You must write your answers on the Writing Answer Sheet. Answers based on question paper are not acceptable.
- Both tasks require answers written in an academic or semi-formal/neutral style.
